Summary
NAP consistency is the disciplined management of customer-facing business identity data. The goal is not character-for-character sameness in every context; it is to prevent conflicting information that confuses customers, platforms, and search systems.
Define the canonical business record
Maintain one approved record containing the public name, address or service area, primary phone, website, hours, categories, and location-specific identifiers. Document acceptable abbreviations and formatting differences so teams know what is a real conflict.
Audit the website first
Check the header, footer, contact page, location pages, schema, legal pages, and mobile click-to-call links. Old phone numbers and addresses often remain in templates or structured data after the visible page is updated.
Review high-value public profiles
Prioritise official business profiles, major industry directories, social profiles, maps, and trusted local sources. Fix important inaccurate listings before spending time on low-quality directories with little customer value.
Handle edge cases carefully
Verify changes and maintain a log
After updating a source, record the date, owner, old value, new value, and verification method. Re-scan the website and recheck priority profiles instead of marking the task complete based only on the edit request.
